Steven Devaney
Music Composer
It became apparent at an early age that Steve Devaney would carry the heavy burden of too many interests. An artist, a writer, and a musician, Steve has always lived for the creative and collaborative process. Musically, Steve cut his teeth in high school, playing bass guitar, keyboards, and Moog Taurus bass pedals in a progressive rock band, where he was weaned on such bands as Yes, Rush, and Pink Floyd—and where his skill in music was galvanized in the crucible of odd time signatures, tempo changes, and unnecessarily fast licks (i.e., melodic phrases). Eventually transitioning to guitar, Steve has spent his life composing and performing in a variety bands, his most beloved of which being the goth-industrial project Drop Black Sky.
In his twenties he worked for a mom-and-pop owned Chinese market, where he learned to speak Mandarin fluently. Steve’s education includes a bachelor’s degree in Chinese (Mandarin), extensive undergrad and graduate studies in Archeology and Social Anthropology, and a master’s degree in English (Creative Writing). Steve has worked as a graphic artist, as well as a 3D artist, animator, creative writer, and sound designer in the video game industry (most notably, Tetris and Immortals of Aveum). He has been published in the TTRPG industry (TSR, Chaosium, SJ Games).
